AMALGAMATED INSTRUMENT CO PTY LTD - NEWSLETTER
November 20th 2002 - Issue Number 6

A Merry Christmas

We would like to wish you a peaceful holiday season and a prosperous new year in 2003.

Amalgamated Instrument Co Pty Ltd will close at the end of trading on Tuesday, 24th December 2002 and reopen on Monday, January 13th 2003.

We are always pleased to hear where our products turn up!

Some AIC PM4-QC quadrature counters are keeping an eye on the depth of drill holes and the total depth drilled in mines in South Africa.

Some RM4-CO DIN rail mount conductivity instrumentation and cells are finding their way to Antarctica as part of Australia's effort to adhere to the protocol to keep enviromental impact to a minimum.

A physiotherapist in Canberra (Australia) is using the HH4-WT handheld load meter in measuring the explosive leg flexing force in elite athletes.

We hope we can bring you details of these and other applications in later editions of the newsletter

If you have used any AIC products in unusual applications or circumstances, we would love to hear about them. If you could supply some photos, it would be even better. You, our customers, are specialists in your particular areas. There may be others who could use your expertise. Please let us pass your experience on.

We have sent this newsletter to people who have asked to receive it through the request form on our website or whose e-mail addresses we have received as a result of the registration of our CD-ROM or other sales inquiries.

If you do not wish to receive any further issues of the AIC newsletter, please let us know and we will remove you from the subscriber list. Please send an e-mail to maillist@aicpl.com.au and include "Remove" in the subject line. I will respond with an acknowledgement e-mail and remove you from the list.

Perhaps you know of colleagues who would like to receive our newsletter. Please send an e-mail to maillist@aicpl.com.au and include their e-mail address.

54 series pH and ORP electrodes

New light industrial pH and ORP electrodes

The ASI series 54 pH and ORP electrodes are an economical answer to inline pH & ORP sensing in light industrial applications. The electrodes feature a double junction reference to enhance the resistance to reference contamination and to increase electrode life. The sensing elements are protected by a bulb guard.

The process connection is a ½" NPT thread. Detachable cables allow the electrodes to be easily installed and removed from a process. The cables are available in 3 lengths - 1 metre, 5 metre and 10 metre and are fitted with either a BNC connector or "bootlace" pin terminations. The cables have a protective "boot" over the electrode connector.

The electrodes are colour coded - pH has a blue cap and ORP has a red cap - to further enhance the ease of use.

The 54 series electrodes have a temperature rating to 80oC and a pressure rating to 5 bar.
Wetted materials are ABS, glass and platinum (in the ORP electrode).

Examples of applications could include:

More flexibility in scanning monitors

The TP488 range of instruments from Amalgamated Instruments Co Pty Ltd can be used to provide a "complete picture" of an application.

These 8 channel scanning monitors are available for temperature measurement, logging and control for RTD sensors or thermocouples or as a very flexible product accepting DC analog input . The wall mounted instruments have 8 relays as standard and these can be assigned:

This flexibility in relay assignment enhances the utility of the TP488 range.

A data logging feature with 32k or 128k capacity is available for the TP488 models. Data is logged internally and can be downloaded as required. The feature can also be used in data streaming mode if required. If logs are taken every hour, the 128K logger can store 266 days, 16 hours of data.
That's well over 8 months of data! If samples are taken at shorter intervals, of course, the capacity is less.

The data logging feature is shipped with WindowsTM compatible software. This software allows the downloading, storage and display of logged data. The software, too, is designed with flexibility in mind and the display type, colours and scales can be defined by the user (amongst other parameters). The software also allows communication with the TP488 to set relay configuration etc.

The 8 channel capacity is ideal in applications such as cool rooms, mushroom farms or wineries etc where multiple points need to be monitored and warnings activated if any of them "go out of line". The 8 channels also make the product ideal for the base of a meteorological station.
With appropriate signal conditioning, the TP488 units could be used to store a "complete picture" of a wide range of parameters such as pH, pressure, temperature, conductivity etc. Examples of such applications would be a swimming complex or a water treatment plant.

These scanning monitors offer a very cost effective answer to applications where multiple parameters need to be monitored. The data logging option extends the flexibility and provides a record of operation for later analysis.
